A Broad-Minded Bulgarian Government

You have certainly noticed how many times President Rosen Plevneliev used the phrase “a broad-minded person” referring to almost every member of his caretaker government. I don’t know whether this is good or not that good for a cabinet minister.

A broad-minded finance minister, for example, can sink the Treasury. An equally broad-minded sports minister (we already have a phenomenal experience from last year) might fail to see the tiny, yet important details that impede Bulgarian sports.

In addition to being broad-minded, the caretaker cabinet ministers undoubtedly are people whose university diplomas can fill an average-sized truck. Some of them are so popular that a sports stadium would not be large enough to seat their friends.

In short, many of the people tipped by media as would-be members of the caretaker cabinet over the past week would have to prove in the next two months not only their broad-mindedness but the genuine knowledge of the matters they would have to deal with as well.

The new cabinet – a caretaker entity and a rather temporary one – comprises people from the entire Bulgarian political spectrum: from undoubtedly left-leaning personalities such as Prime Minister Georgi Bliznashki, to staunch right-wingers such as Yordan Bakalov and Velizar Shalamanov, from seasoned professionals such as Ekaterina Zaharieva, Vasil Shtonov, Iliyana Tsanova, Yordan Hristoskov and Hristo Ivanov) to people who are yet to navigate through the complex matters facing their ministries (Rumyana Kolarova, Daniel Mitov, Martin Ivanov, Evgeniya Radanova).

If this motley cabinet succeeds in demonstrating morality, honesty, transparency, ethical behavior and determination, this would be a great signal for Europe, for Bulgaria’s NATO partners and for the business community, which has somewhat forgotten Bulgaria over the past year.

No one can make miracles in two months but the cabinet members can act to ensure that miracles will happen – irreversibly - in the years ahead.

And if this experiment succeeds, why not have a cocktail of able and ambitious people – no matter whether they are left-leaning or right-leaning – forming all other Bulgarian governments in the future? And let’s not forget – broad-minded Bulgarians.
